Greenwich West Community Centre
Greenwich Moves is a weekly Open Floor class and community with a history dating back to around 2001, when it was founded by Peter Wilberforce as Greenwich Rhythms, a 5Rhythmsclass. Like Doctor Who, it has had many regenerations, and I am honoured to be the latest.
The class is an opportunity for embodied exploration through dance movement – an invitation to play, experiment, feel and be. We move to an eclectic range of music, with a little facilitation to help you feel into your body and connect with your practice, but the emphasis is on offering a space for dances to emerge.
This is a friendly, diverse community of dancers which welcomes newcomers – both experienced movers and complete beginners. There’s no choreography to get right, and no dance experience or ability is necessary, just a willingness to move and offer your attention to what spontaneously unfolds.
We aim to be a safe space for people of all ethnicities, sexualities, genders, neurologies and dis/abilities. As an autistic person, I understand that what excludes us is often invisible to others, so if there’s anything you need in order to have full access to the dance, or anything you’d like me to know, please do talk to me – we can work it out together. Children accompanied by an adult are welcome. If you bring a child, please be prepared to make their welfare in the class your priority.
All are welcome to this friendly community dance practice. There is a little facilitation and lots of time just to dance. More about Greenwich Moves is here.
