Cold and flu season has arrived. The days are getting shorter and the lack of sunlight could be one reason why you feel more tired than usual and you are more prone to infections.

Instead of taking your usual over-the-counter medication, there’s a few natural ways you can boost your immune system to fight off infections during these cold months.

Sleep : When we sleep, our body releases a certain type of cells that can recognize and destroy virus-infected cells. Not getting enough sleep therefore reduces their availability, making you more susceptible to catching colds and flu. For adults, 7 to 9 hours are usually recommended.

Cold showers : This sounds counter-intuitive right ? However, moving from hot to cold water can boost disease-fighting immune cells. Wim Hof  is a famous Dutch athlete who regularly takes ice baths and has reported the amazing health benefits of the ”cold therapy”. No need to be that extreme though. Starting with 30 seconds at the end of your normal shower will do wonders .

Antioxidants : Fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants can boost the immune system by protecting the body from the damage caused by free radicals. Fall is the perfect season to increase your intake of these foods. Cruciferous vegetables  in particular – such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts – are loaded with vitamin C and E. Try to eat them lightly cooked to preserve all the vitamins.

These are some of my tips to boost your immune system. I am a big believer of prevention over reaction. There is no point in waiting until you get sick to start supporting your immune system. My recommendation would be to adjust your diet and lifestyle today to increase your resistance to seasonal ills. Remember A great majority of the immune system is located in the gut and the gut communicates with the brain. By targeting gut health, we can address a lot of imbalances at the same time as our body is made of different systems that are interconnected.
