Less-Stress talked with Heather Mason to learn more about the real meaning of Yoga Therapy and how their research and teaching methods hope to one day change the politics of healthcare.

What is it that you do, can you tell us something about Minded? 

Minded is an umbrella organization that teaches yoga therapy and mindfulness to people with chronic physical and health needs and also offers training to yoga teachers and health professionals of all types.  We are deeply invested in aligning mind-body techniques with an understanding of physiology and neuroscience so that there is firm grounding in what we offer.

What is your greatest challenge at the moment?

There are so many people who need help and support with managing their well-being and not enough people to actually meet the demand.  I think the challenge is how to train more people quickly at a high standard.

What is your greatest Joy?

There is not one greatest joy, although feeling at peace is the best experience I can imagine and have felt.  I love dogs, I love singing, and I love helping people to heal.

Your greatest Hope

That more people will learn the simple skills to take care of themselves and actually do so.  Also that we will take care of this precious planet and honour it’s living beings and their environment.

What is the most important lesson you have learnt since founding the Minded Institute?

That what might seem like a disaster is often a huge opportunity in waiting.

A week never goes by without…?

Remembering the importance of my breath and being grateful for the years I spent meditating in South East Asia.  Most weeks also do not pass without a few chai lattes from Starbucks.
